Upon their return to Niagara from Detroit in the summer of 1784, a group of Iroquois
Scouts and Butler's Rangers under Cpt. W. Caldwell, probably came across a scene like this.
The Grand River Valley, as seen from Tutela Heights in Brantford.
In the summer of 1784, rumours were that Cpt. Joseph Brant was negotiating to obtained for
England's loyal Iroquois Confederation, these lands surrounding the Grand River for resettlement
of those no longer wishing to remain under US rule in the Mohawk Valley in what today is NY State.

from the beginning and extending in that proportion to the head
of the said river which them and their prosperity are to enjoy forever".
