Born in Europe of Russian & German background, Michael has lived in North America since the 1950's. During this time his career as illustrator has taken him throughout continental America and much of Europe.

A past member of the Society of Illustrators (Los Angeles), Michael has won his share of awards such as the Winsor & Newton's call for entries. He has won the prestigious first place twice out of three times his name was entered.

During his one man show in Vence, the French Riviera, Michael fell in love with the Mediterranean / Italian area and enjoys painting this historic region with its unique sunlight ambiance. In the past two years he has traveled Italy from Positano to Venice and is currently exploring Tuscany with his art.

Along with selected commissions, he produces a number of high quality originals per year which sell quickly to a growing list of private and corporate collectors.

To be good at what I do, is my motivation. Along the way, I have had a few lucky breaks. The first came around the age of 14 while taking the part time art lessons. A.Y. Jackson a founding member of Canada's famous Group of Seven, was a frequent house guest during this time. His gentle prodding and suggestions became lasting impressions. I still value and often rely on those pointers he offered long ago.

The second and one of my most fortunate encounters was with Gordon Tyler, a natural teacher and friend. In his all too short course of how to make a living from one's talent, I learned to have confidence in my ability.

Another lucky break came during my first real paying job as a junior illustrator for an ad agency. Stan Walsh, our creative director, was one of those people who believed in nurturing talent. His guidance and determination (not to mention partying) taught me much of the advertising business. This became the catalyst for much of my future success in art.

I have always enjoyed the challenge of painting a likeness, the real fun however, begins when  I listen to my
inner feelings, these sometimes obscure emotions stir my creative juices into action.
Many of the best works are created without much conscious thought, the images seem just to happen.
Particularly when painting in some of my favorite locations around the world.

      charming medieval stone architecture.

      My current focus is Italy,
      Venice & Tuscany are some
of my favorite areas to paint.

Good artists always impress me, Richard Schmid is one of those who I greatly admire
Each time I see work of his caliber, it awakens something in me and once again
I am that young boy, amazed that human hands can actually create pictures like that.
